The illegal dumping of fish waste along Namosi Road has prompted immediate enforcement action from authorities in Fiji, sending a clear message that breaches of environmental laws will not be tolerated. Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Lynda Tabuya, spoke out strongly about the incident, which was linked to a fish processing facility located in Walu Bay.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) conducted a joint inspection, revealing serious violations of environmental regulations. Investigators discovered that the company involved was operating without a proper waste disposal permit and had hired an unlicensed waste transporter.

Tabuya condemned the actions of the company, speaking to the harmful impact such irresponsible practices have on public health and the environment. She emphasized that these violations undermine the integrity of businesses that adhere to the law.

Additionally, authorities confirmed that the vehicle involved in the illegal dumping had previously been denied entry into the Naboro Landfill due to the improper packaging of the fish waste. Despite this, the same waste was later dumped unlawfully along Namosi Road. Fortunately, the waste has since been recovered and safely transported back to Naboro by a licensed operator.

The responsible company will receive a non-compliance notice, and further action will be taken under Section 45 of the Environment Management Act 2005. Tabuya warned that tougher measures are forthcoming, asserting that compliance with environmental laws is non-negotiable.

The government is also reviewing litter legislation, with intentions to introduce stricter penalties and potential criminal liability for corporations that disregard environmental regulations. This move indicates a proactive approach to safeguarding the environment and promoting compliance among businesses in the region. Such positive steps reflect growing recognition of the importance of environmental stewardship and the need for collective responsibility in protecting public health and natural resources.
