Violence against women continues to be a critical challenge in Fiji, according to Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. During the International Women’s Day celebrations held in Labasa, Kiran emphasized that nearly two-thirds of women in the country have encountered some form of violence throughout their lives.

She highlighted troubling statistics indicating that approximately 60 percent of women in Fiji experience violence, revealing the pervasive nature of the issue. Kiran noted that many women who seek assistance often face significant obstacles, including a lack of justice and the economic resources necessary to escape abusive situations.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Kiran revealed that the Fijian government is actively developing a National Action Plan aimed at addressing gender-based violence, which seeks to enhance protection and support systems for women in need. She stressed the importance of building stronger collaborations between government agencies and communities to effectively protect women from violence.

The ongoing commitment to improving support and resources for these vulnerable individuals reflects a hopeful initiative toward creating a safer and more equitable society. The government’s proactive approach highlights a dedication to tackling this urgent issue and fostering a supportive environment for women throughout Fiji.
