The Consumer Council of Fiji is collaborating with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) to create legislation aimed at bolstering consumer protection against scams and deceptive practices. This initiative is designed to provide a comprehensive legal framework for identifying, reporting, and penalizing fraudulent schemes, enhancing consumer confidence and safety within the marketplace.
During a recent parliamentary session discussing the Consolidated Review Report on the Consumer Council of Fiji’s annual reports from 2019-2020, 2021-2022, and 2022-2023, Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development Esrom Immanuel emphasized the importance of this forthcoming legislation. He noted that the Consumer Council serves as the secretariat for the Anti-Scam Task Force, which is chaired by the Ministry of Commerce and Business Development.
Additionally, an Anti-Scam Awareness Week was successfully conducted from October 6 to 7, aimed at educating the public and safeguarding them from fraudsters. Member of Parliament Manoa Kamikamica remarked on the government’s proactive stance in monitoring scams in the country, stating that prior to taking office, there was little visibility regarding scams. He referred to the emergence of an e-Bay scam as a catalyst for increased awareness and action in the area of scam management.
Mr. Kamikamica stressed that the Consumer Council has collaborated with various stakeholders, including the Reserve Bank of Fiji, the Fiji Commerce Commission, law enforcement, and other agencies, to establish a coordinated approach to tackle scams effectively as they arise. However, he also pointed out that current laws lack the necessary strength to manage these issues adequately.
There is a positive outlook that soon, new legislation will be introduced to empower these agencies, enabling them to act swiftly to prevent scams from taking root in Fiji. This initiative reflects a growing commitment to safeguarding consumers and fostering a safer commercial environment in the country.
