Fiji to Roll Out Random Drug Testing for Taxi Drivers: What to Expect

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji plans to introduce random drug testing for taxi drivers, similar to existing procedures for breathalyser tests. Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa revealed that the LTA is procuring drug testing kits, although availability across general practitioners in Fiji is limited, posing a challenge for implementation.

One of the issues identified is that individuals can potentially circumvent testing by abstaining from drug use for two weeks, raising the need for more reliable methods such as hair sampling. However, Mr. Rokosawa acknowledged potential public concerns regarding personal privacy related to hair tests.

To streamline the testing process, the LTA intends to collaborate with the government in budget discussions to acquire the necessary drug testing kits, which will provide rapid results regarding drug use. Following procurement, these kits will be handed over to the Fiji Police Force, who have the authority to enforce legal actions against offenders, while taxi permit holders could enforce their own drug testing protocols for their drivers.

Support for this initiative has come from figures such as Sujit Sharma, secretary of the Labasa Taxi Association, who believes that random testing will help reduce drug use among drivers. He expressed readiness to assist police with information about any taxi drivers allegedly involved in drug-related activities.

This measure could have a significant positive impact on public safety and the wellbeing of both drivers and passengers, fostering a more responsible and drug-free environment within Fiji’s transportation sector.
