Fiji to Review IPACS 2025 Commitments After Regional Culture Forum

The Indonesia–Pacific Cultural Synergy (IPACS) 2025 has fostered enhanced collaboration in culture, education, and the creative sectors among nations in the region, while Fiji is set to meticulously evaluate any new commitments that may emerge from this forum.

At the closing ceremony held in Kupang, Fiji’s Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, reiterated Fiji’s endorsement of the Joint Statement accepted by Pacific Ministers and cultural leaders. This statement emphasizes the significance of culture in promoting sustainable and resilient development throughout the region.

Vasu expressed, “Fiji welcomes the Joint Statement and its vision for a sustainable and resilient region.” However, he noted that the introduction of any new programs or institutional commitments would necessitate internal consultations and Cabinet approval to ensure they align with national policies and regional priorities.

During the forum, the Fijian delegation engaged in cultural exchanges, technical sessions, and bilateral discussions with Indonesia, highlighting Fiji’s priorities such as enhancing cultural education and capacity-building for iTaukei youth and artisans, advancing digital innovation in creative industries, and exploring collaborative opportunities in UNESCO heritage initiatives. The discussions also included hopes of increasing scholarship and vocational training opportunities in arts, agriculture, and heritage, alongside enhancing visa-free travel for Fijian nationals.

Vasu commended the contributions of Fiji’s artists and cultural practitioners involved in IPACS 2025, stating, “Your creativity and dedication have enriched this cultural exchange.” He expressed optimism that the knowledge and skills acquired would empower practitioners and inspire their communities across the region.

The minister stressed the importance of partnership, knowledge-sharing, and a collective commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage. “Maintaining cultural identity requires a shared vision, collaborative efforts, and mutual respect,” he said. Vasu further asserted the need to cultivate an environment that empowers communities, preserves traditional knowledge, and supports the development of future cultural leaders.

Fiji is dedicated to continuing cooperation in cultural education, the creative industries, digital innovation, and the preservation of both tangible and intangible heritage. As Vasu closed his remarks, he encouraged all to return home with a renewed sense of unity and purpose, highlighting the hope that this synergy would flourish, strengthening shared cultural identities and ensuring that traditions remain vibrant for future generations.
