The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is responding to the significant growth in the vehicle population, which has reached around 240,000 registered vehicles over the past decade. During a recent parliamentary review of the consolidated LTA Annual Reports for 2017 to 2020, Assistant Minister for Transport, Naisa Tuinaceva, emphasized the urgent need to expand vehicle inspection services to meet this escalating demand.
Tuinaceva noted that the inspection capacity has not kept pace with the rising number of vehicles on the roads. In response, the LTA is implementing a strategy to widen its network of authorized motor vehicle inspection agencies throughout the country by employing a controlled outsourcing model. This initiative aims to improve three main areas: accessibility and efficiency, enhanced compliance, and partnership with accountability.
Crucial to this framework, all Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators will be required to maintain a valid Quality Management System (QMS) certification. This certification mandates adherence to routine maintenance schedules, mechanical checks, and safety protocols in accordance with LTA technical standards. Tuinaceva stressed that this proactive approach is designed to foster a culture of preventive maintenance and data-driven oversight, thereby increasing public confidence in vehicle safety.
Moreover, before the renewal of any PSV license, the LTA will execute a verification process that includes technical inspections, QMS certification, operator performance reviews, and evaluations of safety and comfort. This process is intended to ensure adherence to safety standards across the board.
In addition to these measures, Tuinaceva highlighted the LTA’s collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Roads Authority, and National Fire Authority to identify and address road accident black spots. The identification process utilizes crash data analysis, joint site assessments, and ongoing monitoring to implement remedial measures effectively.
While encouraging drivers to adopt safer behaviors on the roads, Tuinaceva affirmed that the government is committed to enhancing systems aimed at improving road safety. These initiatives reflect a comprehensive strategy designed not only to mitigate risks associated with the expanding vehicle population but also to safeguard the lives of all road users in Fiji. Through these efforts, there is a strong expectation for a substantial improvement in road safety, ultimately leading to a more secure driving environment for everyone.
