The Government of Fiji is moving towards the naturalisation of Banabans and Kioans, a decision viewed as a crucial step toward granting these communities full recognition and belonging within the nation. Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, made the announcement while commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Banabans’ arrival on Rabi Island at Tabwewa.
Representing the Prime Minister, Minister Vosarogo emphasized that this initiative reflects the Government’s dedication to resolving long-standing issues regarding the legal status of both the Banabans and Kioans. He stated, “This is about recognising who you are and where you belong,” underscoring that naturalisation would validate their place within the Fijian family, along with the rights and recognition that accompany it.
The Cabinet Paper, designed to facilitate this naturalisation process, is being developed with verified lists from community councils to ensure a transparent and fair approach. Once finalized and approved, it will allow eligible members of these communities to formally acquire Fijian citizenship.
In discussing the initiative, the Minister noted the significance of understanding the historical context of the Banaban people, who were relocated to Rabi Island in 1945 under challenging circumstances. He also acknowledged the contributions of Kioans to the social, cultural, and economic landscape of Fiji.
Additionally, Minister Vosarogo highlighted that this naturalisation effort aligns with ongoing governmental reforms, including reviewing the Banaban Act to ensure that elections for the Rabi Council of Leaders comply with national standards, supervised by the Fiji Elections Office. The Government is also committed to investing in infrastructure, transport, essential services, agriculture, fisheries, small businesses, and tourism on Rabi Island, reinforcing an inclusive development strategy for all communities within Fiji.
As Fiji advances under its national vision and the Blue Pacific Strategy, the message is clear: no community should be left behind. This initiative promises to enhance the sense of identity and belonging for the Banabans and Kioans, fostering unity and shared progress within the nation.
