The Fiji Government has expressed its enthusiastic support for the Pacific Islands Forum’s decision to designate Fiji as the host for the Pre-COP31 Meeting in October 2026. This significant gathering will include a Leaders’ component in Tuvalu and a dedicated climate event in Palau as part of the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting.

This development is seen as a pivotal moment for the Blue Pacific, placing the region at the forefront of global climate diplomacy ahead of COP31 in Türkiye. It reflects the trust that Pacific Leaders have in Fiji’s capabilities and leadership in addressing climate action.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that the Pre-COP31 Meeting will serve as a crucial platform for harmonizing Pacific priorities and amplifying the collective voice on vital issues, such as maintaining the global temperature rise within 1.5°C, unlocking accessible climate finance, bolstering resilience for Small Island Developing States, and promoting the interconnection between ocean health and climate stability.

“Hosting Pre-COP31 is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic move. The Pacific is stepping up to shape ambitions, demand accountability, and drive actions that reflect the urgency of our situation,” stated the Prime Minister.

The Pre-COP event is set to maintain the momentum generated from the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting and bridge the gap to the negotiations and Leaders’ Summit at COP31. Fiji intends to collaborate closely with its Pacific neighbors to ensure that the concerns of climate-vulnerable nations are adequately represented in the global discussions.

Taking on this responsibility, Fiji acknowledges the honor and the commitment that comes with it. The Pre-COP will showcase practical, implementation-focused solutions that illustrate how vulnerable nations are addressing the everyday impacts of climate change.

“The Pacific will arrive at Pre-COP31 united and determined. We are prepared to collaborate with all partners to ensure that COP31 yields measurable advancements for our communities and future generations,” the Prime Minister added.

As preparations commence, Fiji appreciates the support of both regional and international partners. Together, they aim to ensure that Pre-COP31 provides clear political direction and revitalizes global momentum toward an ambitious and action-oriented COP31.

Fiji eagerly anticipates welcoming Pacific leaders, global partners, and stakeholders to its shores in October 2026, as the region unites to ensure a strong and influential presence at COP31, driving meaningful progress on the global climate agenda. This upcoming meeting symbolizes hope for concerted global action against climate change, reinforcing the significance of collaborative efforts in the fight against one of the greatest challenges of our time.
