Fiji is set to host the fifth edition of the Pacific Islands Parliamentary Group (PIPG) Conference next year. Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Speaker of Parliament, made this announcement at the conclusion of the fourth PIPG Conference held in Koror, Palau. The news was met with enthusiasm from all conference members.
In regard to enhancing cooperation among legislative bodies in the Pacific, a Working Group has been established, including representatives from French Polynesia, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Palau, and Fiji. This group is tasked with examining options proposed by the PIPG Secretariat. The Working Group plans to convene later this month, engage with PIPG members, and report back for approval by the end of 2024, with the findings set to be formalized at the upcoming conference in Fiji.
Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu remarked on the success of this year’s meeting, highlighting discussions that covered various critical issues such as economic security, food security, health security, gender-based violence, and drug-related challenges in the region. He noted that Fiji contributed significantly and praised the exchange of best practices and legislative changes among the Pacific Island nations.
Representatives from several parliaments attended this year’s meeting, including those from Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hawaii, Niue, Palau, Rapa Nui, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Walis and Futuna. The participants unanimously agreed to the Ngibtal Declaration on ‘Human Security in the Pacific Islands.’ Fiji is eager to welcome delegates to the next PIPG Conference, scheduled for August 25 to 29, 2025.
