The Tri-Nations international boxing event in Fiji is poised to be the largest amateur competition in the country, as stated by Cam Todd, head coach of Fiji Amateur Boxing. Scheduled for June 28-29 at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, the event will feature 30 boxers from Australia and 13 from Samoa, offering a significant platform for junior and youth boxers to compete at an international level.

Todd emphasized the importance of this competition for local boxers, pointing out that it serves as an opportunity for them to gain valuable experience and exposure. “This will be a great event for our junior and youth boxers of all different levels, giving them a taste of international boxing,” he noted. Although preparations are well underway, the coach mentioned that financial constraints remain a challenge, particularly for many boxers who are still in school or unemployed, which affects their training schedules.

Previously, similar events have highlighted the importance of fostering local talent and increasing participation in international competitions. With ongoing support for grassroots development, there is a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s boxing future. The national teams, comprising both junior and youth boxers, represent not only the potential for future champions but also an expanded interest in the sport within Fiji.

By hosting such a prominent event, Fiji is on its way to building a robust amateur boxing framework, aiming to enhance exposure and performance among local athletes. Community support during the event will be crucial and could lead to heightened interest in boxing, potentially nurturing the next generation of fighters. Fiji’s dedication to developing its amateur boxing scene reflects a commitment to training and competition that could yield promising results on an international platform.
