Fiji is set to host the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting from February 9 to 12, 2026, in the city of Nadi. This significant event will bring together approximately 150 delegates, including attorneys general, justice ministers, and solicitors general from the 56 Commonwealth nations.

The meeting will provide a platform for discussions centered on the crucial role of robust legal protections in everyday life. Delegates will focus on ensuring people’s rights to participate in democracy, earn a fair livelihood, and live in safe, healthy communities. Additionally, the ministers aim to establish practical strategies to enhance the rule of law, improve access to justice, and fortify legal institutions, which are vital for fostering stable societies, equitable economies, and environmental sustainability.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey emphasized the urgency of upholding the rule of law, noting that it remains under significant threat in various regions globally. She pointed out, “Where the rule of law is weakened or unevenly applied, the impact is felt most sharply by ordinary people.” Her remarks underscored the importance of collective and thoughtful action over mere rhetoric, as the Commonwealth strives to use the rule of law as a guiding principle for progress and protection.

Fiji’s Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney-General, Siromi Turaga, will chair the meeting, which carries the theme “Anchoring Justice in a Changing Tide: Strengthening the Rule of Law for a Resilient Future.” Turaga expressed hopes that the Commonwealth family could work together to create a more adaptable and inclusive justice system. He mentioned that the discussions would also address the challenges and opportunities posed by climate change, digital advancements, and regional cooperation, ensuring that legal frameworks remain resilient for future generations.

Notably, the event will feature five side events aimed at including the voices of youth leaders, individuals with firsthand experiences of the justice system, and disability rights advocates. Their insights will be instrumental in shaping the discussions among ministers.

The outcomes from this meeting are anticipated to influence the agenda for the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which will take place later this year in Antigua and Barbuda. This collaborative approach highlights the Commonwealth’s commitment to strengthening legal frameworks and ensuring justice and equity for all members, paving the way for a more resilient future.
