The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has announced plans to establish a new drug rehabilitation facility in Naboro as part of its initiative to combat escalating drug abuse among inmates. Acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva stated that this project is crucial for enhancing prison services and delivering focused treatment for offenders dealing with addiction issues.
In his remarks, Moceisuva highlighted the ongoing discussions with relevant authorities regarding the setup of the necessary infrastructure, expressing hope for support from donor partners. He emphasized the pressing challenges faced by existing correctional facilities in managing inmates who arrive with drug dependencies, frequently accompanied by violent or unpredictable behaviors.
Moceisuva elaborated on the security complications posed by these inmates, noting that they often resort to smuggling drugs and mobile phones into the facilities. Some of these illicit items are concealed in body cavities or hidden within the prison walls, creating substantial risks for security.
To bolster safety, the FCS is exploring enhancements in security technology at prison entry points, including the potential implementation of X-ray machines, although financial constraints present obstacles to these upgrades.
The forthcoming Naboro rehabilitation center aims to offer specialized programs that address addiction, with the overarching goals of reducing recidivism rates and facilitating the successful reintegration of inmates back into society. This initiative reflects a hopeful and proactive response to the challenges posed by drug dependency within the prison system.
