Drug-related offenses have emerged as one of the four most prevalent crimes committed by inmates in Fiji, highlighting significant social issues faced by the nation. Auta Moceisuva, the Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, reported that while sex offenses remain the most common, crimes against property and persons, alongside drug-related offenses, are on the rise. This trend indicates that the challenges affecting communities are equally echoed within correctional facilities.

Moceisuva pointed out a critical gap in Fiji’s approach to rehabilitation, noting the absence of dedicated drug rehabilitation facilities outside of the prison system. Current correctional centers, primarily located in Lautoka, Suva, and Labasa, are severely overcrowded, further complicating inmate treatment and rehabilitation.

“So that goes to show that what is happening outside is also being felt inside the physical axis. In terms of treatment, I do not think there is a facility outside of the prisons that has rehabilitation,” Moceisuva said, underlining the pressing need for effective drug recovery programs.

In a positive development, the government has taken action by approving the construction of a national drug rehabilitation center, which will be developed by the Corrections Service. This project is now included in the standard government budget cycle, with ongoing efforts to secure support from development partners and donors to bolster rehabilitation initiatives.

While the authorities are eager to establish this much-needed facility, Moceisuva has expressed concerns regarding the uncertainty of potential funding from external partners. He warned that without improved rehabilitation options, drug-related offenses may continue to escalate, emphasizing the urgent need to enhance rehabilitation capacity in Fiji.

The planned center is expected to address the growing number of drug offenders currently incarcerated in the nation’s prison system, providing a ray of hope for improved treatment and recovery for those battling addiction.
