Fiji Times Editor Wins Top Journalism Awards in the Digital Era

Anish Chand, the managing editor for digital media at The Fiji Times, recently received accolades as both the FAME Journalist of the Year and Print Journalist of the Year. His recognition reflects his relentless pursuit of accountability among leaders and his commitment to being a voice for the marginalized. With 34 years of journalism experience, Chand expressed that winning such prestigious awards is a testament to his passion for the craft.

Chand acknowledged that competing against talented media personnel made the achievement particularly meaningful. He credited The Fiji Times for providing him with the freedom to pursue the stories he believes in, emphasizing the support he has received from the organization throughout his career. At 54 years old, he recognizes that embracing digital media isn’t common for someone his age, but he also sees the potential it holds for impactful storytelling.

Despite being part of a small team of three, Chand noted that their collective efforts have significantly contributed to establishing a formidable presence in the digital landscape. The team’s transition from print to video content, particularly during natural disasters, has resonated with their audience and helped grow their following.

In addition to Chand’s honors, notable awards were presented to others at The Fiji Times. John Kamea, deputy editor of The Sunday Times, received the award for the Print Best Feature Article, while senior journalist Samantha Rina was recognized for the Media Best Coverage of a Major News or Event. Rina dedicated her award to lupus patients who bravely shared their stories. She expressed pride and honor in being part of such a small yet dedicated team, highlighting their hard work at the awards.

These achievements underscore the spirit of innovation and resilience within The Fiji Times, showcasing the importance of journalism in tackling significant issues and uplifting voices that often go unheard.
