The Ministry of Forestry has reaffirmed its dedication to sustainable forest management through the successful conclusion of a Timber Production Officers Workshop that took place in Nasau, Nadi. This event was part of the Monitoring, Compliance, and Surveillance Project, aiming to enhance adherence to the Fiji Forest Harvesting Code of Practice while encouraging responsible practices in forest harvesting throughout the nation.
The workshop gathered timber production officers from various regions to engage in discussions centered on improving operational procedures for timber production. Key topics included reviewing compliance monitoring results, enhancing enforcement mechanisms, and providing training on the Online Licensing Portal, which is integral for ensuring efficient and transparent licensing processes.
Officers also evaluated Standard Operating Procedures, which included issuing fines, stop-work notices, and honing HAR reporting requirements while addressing challenges related to online licensing. Conservator of Forests Sanjana Lal characterized the session as both timely and productive, highlighting its significance in tackling essential operational and regulatory challenges within the forestry sector.
Emerging priorities discussed during the workshop included the upcoming Forest Bill 2025, the Environment Management Act 2025, and the implementation of REDD+ initiatives aimed at mitigating emissions caused by deforestation and forest degradation. Lal emphasized that Timber Production Officers play a crucial role in protecting forest resources, ensuring adherence to legal standards, and enhancing the forestry sector’s contribution to the national economy.
Additionally, Lal commended the officers for fostering collaboration with vital stakeholders such as the Environment Department, the Timber Licensing and Trading Board, the Land Transport Authority, and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority. The Conservator applauded the participants for proactively seeking refresher training, adopting modern mapping technologies like QGIS, improving operational procedures, utilizing digital resources, and prioritizing the use of personal protective equipment. These advancements are seen as essential steps toward cultivating a modern and resilient workforce in the forestry sector.
This workshop not only reinforces the commitment to sustainable practices but also fosters a sense of unity and collaboration among professionals dedicated to preserving Fiji’s valuable forest resources.
