The Ministry of Immigration in Fiji has emphasized that concerns about human trafficking and visa overstays are among its highest priorities. Permanent Secretary Aliki Salusalu highlighted the ministry’s commitment to protecting foreign workers while ensuring strict adherence to visa conditions. She noted that while some foreign nationals may overstay their visas due to changing personal circumstances or a desire to settle permanently, the ministry is dedicated to ensuring their welfare.

Salusalu stated, “For us, it sets the tone that we are concerned about their welfare. We want to make sure that all employees who came to work in Fiji are looked after in terms of their conditional work and rights.” To fortify this commitment, the ministry has implemented a policy to publish the names of visa overstayers in local media, which aids in tracking their whereabouts and linking them to original recruiters and employers. This initiative aims to improve compliance with work permit regulations and foster accountability among employers.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Immigration collaborates with international partners, including Australia, to monitor individuals returning to Fiji with criminal backgrounds. By sharing vital records with relevant agencies, potential risks can be addressed promptly, enhancing overall safety and security.

In addition to these efforts, Film Fiji CEO Jone Robertson praised the country as a favorable filming destination, attributing its appeal to safety, natural beauty, and strong collaboration among immigration authorities, customs, and service providers. He emphasized that the partnerships between Film Fiji, international film crews, and government agencies are critical to sustaining the local film industry and encouraging crews to return to Fiji.

The commitment of the Ministry of Immigration not only aims to protect the rights of foreign workers but also enhances Fiji’s reputation as a hub for international collaboration in both the workforce and the film industry, promising a bright future for both sectors.
