The iTaukei Affairs Ministry, in conjunction with the Environment Ministry, has implemented a new regulation that requires approval for the import and export of ‘tabua’, or whale’s teeth, a culturally significant item for the iTaukei people in Fiji, starting January this year. This decision reflects a commitment to enhance control over the trade of tabua, which is of high traditional value.

It is crucial to recognize that the import and export of tabua into the United States is strictly prohibited, regardless of any additional approvals. There is currently no set quota on tabua imports; however, the ministries will monitor and enforce a monthly export limit of 16 tabua. Individuals looking to take a tabua overseas must adhere to all relevant laws, which includes obtaining import permissions from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and necessary permits from their destination countries.

To streamline the process, approval letters and permits will be issued on a ‘first-come, first-serve’ basis. Therefore, those intending to export a tabua are encouraged to plan their requests ahead of time to avoid conflicting with the set quota. Compliance with the ‘Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora’ (CITES Act) and Customs Regulation is strongly advised to support both national and international conservation efforts.

In summary, the new regulations emphasize the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the iTaukei people while ensuring sustainable practices in wildlife trade. This initiative represents a positive step toward the conservation of invaluable traditional artifacts and reinforcing legal frameworks that protect endangered species.

It is hopeful that these measures will not only ensure the sustainable use of tabua but also enhance awareness and appreciation of the cultural significance of these traditional items among both locals and international communities.
