The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, is set to enhance the enforcement of Fiji’s regulatory framework surrounding the export and import of tabua, an important cultural item. Effective from January 1, 2025, anyone wishing to take a tabua out of Fiji or bring one into the country must first secure an approval letter from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, followed by obtaining an export or import permit from the Ministry of Environment.

It’s important to note that the export or import of tabua is forbidden in the United States, thus, no approval letters will be issued for such cases. The Ministry plans to impose strict enforcement of a monthly quota allowing only 16 tabua to be exported. There’s currently no quota for imports; however, all individuals must fulfill various regulatory requirements including obtaining permits from their country of origin and an import permit from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment.

Approval letters and permits will be processed on a first come, first served basis, which encourages the public to prepare in advance to avoid issues with last-minute requests when the monthly quota could already be reached. Additionally, compliance with the Customs Regulation and CITES Act is strongly advised, linking individual actions to broader national and international conservation efforts.

Overall, these measures not only reinforce the importance of respecting cultural heritage but also contribute to sustainable practices that protect wildlife and biodiversity. As Fiji moves forward with these regulations, it emphasizes the value placed on conservation and cultural identity.
