The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, is set to enhance the enforcement of Fiji’s regulations governing the export and import of tabua, or whale teeth. Starting from January 1, 2025, individuals wishing to take a tabua out of Fiji or bring one into the country will need to follow a specific approval process. Before attempting to export or import a tabua, individuals must first secure an approval letter from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs. Following that, an export or import permit must be obtained from the Ministry of Environment.

It’s crucial to note that tabua export and import to the United States is strictly prohibited, meaning that the Ministry will not issue approval letters for such requests. Additionally, a monthly quota of 16 tabua for export has been mandated, with the Ministry prepared to enforce this limit rigorously. While there is no set quota for importing tabua, individuals must still comply with all regulatory requirements, which include acquiring the necessary permits from the exporting country and the Ministry of Environment in Fiji.

To facilitate the process, approval letters and permits will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, the public is encouraged to plan ahead, as last-minute requests may find the monthly quota already filled. Compliance with the Customs Regulation and CITES Act is essential to support national and international conservation initiatives.

This regulatory framework reflects Fiji’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while participating in global conservation efforts. With proper planning and adherence to these guidelines, individuals can responsibly engage in the tabua trade while contributing to the protection of vulnerable marine species.
