The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, is set to enhance the enforcement of Fiji’s regulatory framework regarding the export and import of tabua. Starting January 1, 2025, individuals wishing to take a tabua outside Fiji or bring one into the country must secure an approval letter from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, followed by obtaining an export or import permit from the Ministry of Environment.

Without this required permit, individuals will be prohibited from traveling with a tabua. Notably, tabua exports or imports to the United States are banned, which means no approval letters will be granted for those cases.

Additionally, the enforcement will include a strict monthly quota, allowing only 16 tabua to be exported each month. While no quota exists for the import of tabua, individuals must fulfill various regulatory requirements, including obtaining permits from the country of origin and an import permit from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment.

To ensure applicants can meet their export needs, the public is encouraged to submit their requests early, as permits and approval letters are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. This proactive approach aligns with Fiji’s commitments to national and international conservation efforts, adhering to the Customs Regulation and the CITES Act.

This initiative reflects a commitment to protect cultural heritage while also ensuring that practices surrounding tabua are regulated and sustainable. By formalizing the processes, it demonstrates a significant step towards maintaining both local traditions and ecological responsibilities.

In summary, the new regulatory measures will not only help preserve the tabua as a significant cultural artifact but also contribute to broader conservation efforts, fostering a responsible approach to managing natural resources.
