The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has alerted vehicle importers about updated regulations for importing used vehicles into Fiji starting January 1, 2025. Under these new guidelines, only used hybrid vehicles manufactured in 2020 or later and used diesel and petrol vehicles from 2017 or newer will be permitted for import.
FRCS has stated that any motor vehicle import licenses granted this year (2024) for hybrid models from 2019 and diesel/petrol passenger vehicles from 2016 must have these vehicles shipped from their country of origin by December 31, 2024. Vehicles that do not comply with this timeline and are shipped after this date will not be able to receive an import license, will be classified as prohibited imports, and will be subject to re-exportation at the importer’s expense.
To mitigate potential issues, FRCS urges all motor vehicle dealers, traders, importers, and the general public to secure an import license before shipping vehicles to Fiji.
These measures are likely aimed at ensuring that the fleet of vehicles in Fiji remains modern and environmentally friendly, contributing to better air quality and reducing vehicle emissions. This shift not only aligns with global trends toward sustainability but also provides an opportunity for the vehicle market in Fiji to evolve with newer technologies, enhancing overall transportation standards within the country.
In summary, starting January 1, 2025, Fiji will enforce stricter import regulations for used vehicles to encourage a newer, more sustainable automotive fleet. Importers are advised to be proactive in obtaining the necessary licenses to avoid complications.
