Fiji Tightens Road Safety Crackdown on Repeat Speed Offenders

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is ramping up its efforts to address the critical issue of road safety by intensifying actions against repeat traffic offenders. This decision comes on the heels of a recent report indicating that portable speed cameras deployed across Fiji have recorded an alarming 15,000 violations in merely two months.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa revealed that speeding has emerged as the leading cause of road fatalities in 2025, with 37 out of 62 deaths linked directly to excessive speeds. The statistics underline the urgency of the situation, as LTA moves to implement stricter measures to curb reckless driving behaviors.

Since the introduction of 12 portable cameras in September, the Western Division has witnessed the highest rate of violations, accounting for 8,624 infractions. Meanwhile, the Central-Eastern division recorded 5,314 violations, and the Northern division 1,651. In an effort to enforce speed limits more effectively, Rokosawa emphasized that these limits are laws and not mere suggestions. Repeat offenders face possible showcause proceedings, which could lead to the suspension or revocation of their driving privileges.

From January through October, the LTA has taken significant actions against habitual offenders, cancelling 19 licenses, suspending 48, and issuing thousands of warnings. The portable cameras, strategically placed in high-risk zones and school areas, utilize advanced technology for accurate detection and reinforced law enforcement.

This initiative aligns with previous measures aimed at improving road safety through consistent monitoring, where portable speed cameras are not simply punitive tools, but vital components of a broader strategy to deter dangerous driving. With ongoing educational campaigns to promote responsible driving alongside rigorous enforcement, the LTA expresses optimism that these efforts will lead to a substantial reduction in traffic incidents, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all road users in Fiji.
