Fiji’s Ministry of Health is ramping up its precautionary measures amid a rising number of measles cases in neighboring Australia and New Zealand. Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, emphasized the importance of maintaining Fiji’s measles-free status, a significant achievement formally acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO).

To safeguard this health milestone, the Ministry is enhancing public awareness campaigns through the Fiji Centre for Disease Control. They are also closely monitoring border crossings and tracking any suspected measles cases reported from nursing stations, health centers, and subdivision hospitals.

Dr. Lalabalavu stated, “It’s not just about an achievement, it’s to ensure that we continue to monitor that we do not get any new cases of measles in Fiji.” He reassured that while the WHO recognition is notable, the primary goal of the Ministry is the protection of public health and the prevention of any potential resurgence of measles in the country.

As the region faces public health challenges, Fiji’s proactive stance reflects its commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of its citizens and maintaining its disease-free status.
