Fiji recently celebrated International Mother Language Day, an occasion dedicated to the vital role languages play in preserving cultural heritage and strengthening national identity and community cohesion.

Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Penioni Ravunawa, emphasized that language transcends mere communication, encompassing identity, history, and values. He stated, “Understanding the language, it creates a supportive environment and also brings better health outcomes with our patients that we saw in the hospital. Inclusion begins with being heard and being understood.” His remarks reflect the belief that communicating with patients in their own languages enhances trust and results in improved health outcomes, a sentiment he shared from his experiences in Labasa.

Moreover, the event underscored the ongoing collaboration between Fiji and India in fostering language, culture, education, and community development. Ravunawa urged youth and local communities to actively preserve their native languages, pointing out that doing so is essential for building a resilient, inclusive, and united Fiji.

This celebration not only honors the importance of mother tongues but also paves the way for a more inclusive society, where every individual’s voice contributes to the rich tapestry of Fijian identity.
