Fiji ties land rights to forest finance at COP30

Fiji has once again made its presence felt on the international stage by participating in the High-Level Forest Climate Leaders Partnership meeting at COP30, held in Belém, Brazil. Represented by Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu, Fiji emphasized the critical connection between forest protection and climate resilience, particularly in the context of the Amazon rainforest.

During his address to global leaders, Minister Bulitavu underscored the unique situation in Fiji, where much of the land is owned by customary landowners. He pointed out that secure land tenure is not only a vital part of Fijian culture but also essential for effective forest protection and equitable access to climate finance. The minister highlighted that robust land rights can empower communities to engage in carbon market opportunities and fully benefit from them.

The meeting yielded significant advancements, including the development of a global roadmap aimed at closing the forest finance gap. Leaders expressed enhanced backing for jurisdictional REDD+ programs, designed to facilitate large-scale forest protection initiatives. More than $5.5 billion was pledged to support efforts in tropical forest conservation, along with a renewed commitment to bolster international cooperation on fire management strategies.

The outcomes of this summit reflect the increasing momentum of the Forest Climate Leaders Partnership, which is dedicated to safeguarding forests, upholding the rights of Indigenous and local communities, and promoting global climate action. Fiji reiterated its readiness to collaborate on these common objectives, continuing its advocacy for sustainable forest management that benefits both ecosystems and local communities.

The progress made at the meeting offers hope for a collaborative global effort in addressing climate challenges and reinforces the importance of integrating community rights into environmental action plans.
