Despite facing numerous challenges, 16-year-old Makereta Valanatoma Saukuru Toroca Uculoa views life as a significant teacher. As a student at Jai Narayan College, her academic and personal experiences have molded her into a resilient and self-assured individual. Originally from the highlands of Navolau in Naitasiri, Uculoa has witnessed her family’s struggles while growing up in a household of six.
Reflecting on her past, she recalls the difficulties of relocating to Lomaivuna Settlement and adjusting to a new rural life. Nevertheless, she and her siblings remained dedicated to their education. “Life itself became a valuable teacher as I learned to face obstacles and overcome challenges—both academically and personally—on my own,” Uculoa stated.
Earlier this year, Uculoa participated in the TechGirls Program, a U.S.-based summer exchange initiative aimed at empowering young women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). She discovered the program through a Facebook post shared by the U.S. Embassy in Suva and, encouraged by her mother, went through the challenging application process. “Submitting it on time and receiving the outcome was thrilling,” she reflected, noting that her experience transformed her outlook.
Through the TechGirls Program, Uculoa developed her confidence and learned the significance of being an inspiring role model in her community. “It has broadened my horizons and deepened my passion for making a difference through technology and leadership,” she shared.
Looking ahead, Uculoa aims to pursue civil and environmental engineering after high school, recognizing it aligns with her academic interests. However, she remains open to exploring other career options, considering past aspirations of being a doctor or a pilot. “The program has broadened my perspective by introducing me to a variety of career paths within the STEM field,” she expressed.
In her leisure time, Uculoa enjoys volleyball, reading, baking, cooking, and drawing. Her heartfelt advice to younger generations emphasizes perseverance: “Don’t let your age discourage you. Believe in yourself, embrace your uniqueness, and stay true to who you are.” Uculoa emphasizes the importance of maintaining faith in God throughout life’s challenges and endeavors.
Her story showcases resilience and determination, mirroring the journeys observed in young women like Luisa Grace Tuituku Tagicakibau and Sainimere Kurumaira, who have also redefined their paths amid adversity. These narratives reflect a powerful message about the value of education, community support, and the belief in brighter futures, inspiring many to embrace their dreams despite obstacles.
