Fifteen-year-old Niconia Wivou made waves at this year’s Paddle for Cancer event, proving that age is no obstacle to contributing to meaningful causes. The Year 10 student from International School Nadi successfully completed the challenging 36-kilometer paddle from Castaway Island Resort to Wailoaloa Beach, joining participants from various resorts and paddle clubs across Fiji to raise awareness and support for cancer research.
Crossing the finish line, Niconia radiated joy, describing the experience as both enjoyable and fulfilling. “It’s fun being out with the crew members from Castaway and Outrigger. It’s even more special knowing that you’re doing it for a good cause. I just enjoyed being out there,” she expressed. Niconia started paddling in March of the previous year and saw this long-distance challenge as an empowering exercise, affirming, “Even as a 15-year-old, I can make a difference — inspire others and show that anyone can take part.”
Her passion for paddling stems from her deep connection with the ocean, which she claims brings her peace. Niconia’s achievement was commemorated with an emotional surprise waiting for her as she reached the shores of Wailoaloa; her maternal family from Rotuma welcomed her with a traditional ceremony, showering her with admiration, cheers, and songs. “I felt very grateful. I was surprised; I wasn’t expecting it, but I’m so thankful for my family’s support,” she remarked.
The Paddle for Cancer event resonates with a larger commitment to supporting those affected by cancer within the community. This year’s outing draws inspiration from the legacy of Christian Pesamino, a young paddler who passed away from leukemia. Events like these highlight the importance of unity and resilience in the fight against cancer and elevate community spirit, showing how collective efforts can drive hope and support those in need. Each stroke in the paddle reflects a commitment to contribute positively, reinforcing the idea that every participant, regardless of age, plays a crucial role in making a difference.
Niconia Wivou’s inspiring participation underscores a vital message: that even young individuals can make impactful contributions towards the causes they believe in.
