Fifteen-year-old Karel Ooms has made history at the Battle Paddle event organized by the Vuda Canoe Club at the Vuda Marina, where he triumphed in the newly introduced junior grade category. The competition, supported by Varua Va’a, boasted excellent weather and participation from four canoe clubs: Vuda, Nadi Canoe, USP, and Tagafa Canoe Clubs.
Ooms demonstrated remarkable strength and skill throughout the race, finishing impressively to become the inaugural junior winner of the event. This year’s Battle Paddle was notable for being the first to feature a junior division, following a successful previous run that highlighted the potential of young paddlers in Fiji.
Overjoyed by his win, Ooms expressed his joy, saying, “I feel good. My main message was to go hard, keep going till you make it.” His triumph follows his national debut at the Palau Mini Games and participation in the World Championships in Va’a long-distance competition in Rio.
Tournament coordinator Dr. Byron Fatiaki praised the outcome of the event, emphasizing its significance for those interested in the sport, which is still developing in Fiji. “This tournament provides an opportunity for anyone who wants to venture out into the sport. The inclusion of a junior category helps the younger generation to get involved. We are even looking at adding a masters category next year,” Dr. Fatiaki remarked.
He further noted the importance of investing in youth, stating that they represent the future of the sport and the key to its evolution. The growing interest from families and juniors, particularly those who have excelled at events like the Pacific Mini Games, reflects a nationwide commitment to nurturing young talent.
This event not only marks a significant milestone for Karel Ooms but also symbolizes a hopeful development for Fiji’s paddling community as opportunities for young athletes continue to expand. The enthusiasm surrounding the promotion of junior categories lays a robust foundation for future competitions and encourages emerging talents to pursue sports while fostering a spirited community atmosphere aimed at success.
