Federico Miller, a dedicated student at Marist Brothers High School, is setting his sights high as he aims to break the senior boys triple jump record at the Coke Games and secure qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. At just 17 years old, Miller is already making a name for himself in athletics, having represented Fiji at last year’s Pacific Mini Games in Palau, where he won a gold medal.
While many peers are enjoying their school holidays, Miller is fully committed to his training regimen under the watchful eye of former national triple jump champion Eugene Vollmer at the Marist Athletics Club. Miller expresses gratitude for his experiences thus far, highlighting how competing against top athletes from different countries at a young age has significantly contributed to his growth as an athlete.
Vollmer is optimistic about Miller’s prospects, foreseeing his participation in upcoming international competitions, including the 2025 Pacific Mini Games. “Last year, Federico won gold at the Pacific Mini Games, and he will aim for a spot at the Commonwealth Games, as well as the Oceania Championships and the Youth Olympics,” Vollmer stated.
However, qualifying for the Commonwealth Games presents a rigorous challenge. Miller needs to achieve a jump of 15 meters to secure his position. Currently, his personal best stands at 14 meters, but he remains determined. “It won’t be easy, and I’ll have to work really hard, but with my coach’s support, I believe I have a chance,” Miller explained.
As part of his preparation strategy, he also aims to break the senior boys triple jump record at the Coke Games, which is set at 14.62 meters. He recognizes this milestone as a crucial step toward achieving the 15-meter qualifying jump for the Commonwealth Games. “My primary goal for the Coke Games is to beat the senior boys triple jump record, which is close to my personal best,” he said.
Miller’s spirit and determination embody the drive required in athletics. With focus and hard work, he is not just aspiring to break records but also to pave the way for future successes on the international stage.
