Fiji Teams Up with UN to Boost Climate Data for a Sustainable Future

The Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS) has partnered with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to strengthen the country’s climate change-related statistics. This collaboration is a crucial element of Fiji’s ongoing initiative to enhance data collection and analysis for effective climate change policy-making.

Key objectives of the mission involve reviewing progress on existing climate change action plans and actively engaging with stakeholders, including data owners and different governmental ministries. This approach ensures the comprehensive and accurate collection of essential climate data.

Participants aim to assess and compile priority climate change indicators identified in meetings held in July and November 2024. They will also finalize related metadata, produce quality reports on these indicators, and develop the FBoS’s initial publication focused on climate change statistics. By the conclusion of this mission, a draft of an experimental release on the climate change statistics is expected, accompanied by a strategic plan for its finalization and publication by the second quarter of 2025.

This initiative signifies a vital advance in enhancing Fiji’s capacity for data-driven decision-making concerning climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. As highlighted in previous discussions led by leaders such as Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad, addressing climate change effectively relies on robust data and political unity among Pacific nations. The upcoming COP30 conference in Brazil is anticipated to provide a platform for strengthening this collaborative effort, potentially leading to more effective climate resilience strategies.

By prioritizing the accurate measurement and reporting of climate data, Fiji is taking proactive steps towards embracing a sustainable future. The collaboration with ESCAP is not only a significant opportunity for enhancing regional data expertise but also fosters hopes for a collective commitment among Pacific island nations to tackle climate challenges head-on.

This initiative exemplifies the potential for innovation and cooperative engagement, positioning Fiji as a pivotal player in the global discourse on climate resilience.
