A collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection and the Fiji Police Force has been actively addressing concerns around street beggars and vulnerable children in urban areas over the past fortnight. This effort, which entails regular sweeps in identified hotspot regions, aims to tackle the rising number of individuals, particularly children, selling or residing on the streets.
In a demonstration of compassion and support, the Ministry reported that families discovered begging with children have been provided with essential food rations and safely returned to their homes. Furthermore, senior citizens found living without shelter were extended care and accommodation at the Golden Age Home, ensuring that they receive the support they need during the festive season.
As the holiday period approaches, the Ministry emphasizes the importance of parental responsibility, urging guardians to keep their children safe and supervised, particularly during school holidays. They have outlined a protocol for children found loitering in public places unaccompanied — such children will be taken to safety, and their parents or guardians will receive a follow-up visit to provide counseling aimed at enhancing child welfare.
The Government’s commitment to protecting children and supporting vulnerable populations remains resolute, assuring communities that their safety and wellbeing are prioritized throughout this celebratory season.
