Members of the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) have recently converged to address critical issues impacting their working conditions, underlining the importance of improved remuneration and policies for educators. Key topics discussed included merit pay, the backdating of promotions, and salary concerns specifically for early childhood educators, alongside the broader need for ongoing support for teachers.
General Secretary Muniappa Goundar emphasized the union’s initiative in advocating for a Teachers Protection Policy, aimed at creating a safer workplace for educators. The FTU, which boasts around 4,500 members, is committed to fostering optimal working conditions through strong operational policies. National President Sashi Mahendra Shandil highlighted the union’s achievements while stressing the significance of unity among members to face shared challenges.
During the capacity-building session, Assistant General Secretary Rajnesh Ishwar Lingam underscored the importance of teamwork among union leaders to effectively communicate and disseminate important information at the grassroots level. The engagement of experienced voices, such as retired educator Roop Chand, brought an inspiring perspective, encouraging younger members to actively participate in union activities and benefit from various programs including the FTU medical scheme.
Personnel Officer Rameshwar Lal spoke on the Mutual Aid Benefit Scheme, which facilitates medical support for union members, reflecting the FTU’s strong focus on the welfare of educators. Moreover, National Women’s Wing Chairwoman Urmila Singh highlighted the critical role of women members engaging in union events, such as workshops and conferences.
Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh expressed gratitude towards the FTU for their unwavering commitment to addressing teacher concerns and assured support for ongoing initiatives. This tone of collaborative effort across various stakeholders represents a hopeful outlook for the future of educational standards in Fiji, demonstrating that through unity and advocacy, significant improvements to the teaching environment are achievable.
As ongoing discussions lead to a greater emphasis on teacher protection, adequate compensation, and workplace safety, there is optimism that these efforts will contribute to a more stable and supportive educational framework, ultimately benefitting both educators and students.
