Nearly 400 teachers in Fiji who have recently enhanced their qualifications are set to receive their salary upgrades. They will receive half of the total payment shortly, with the remaining 50 percent scheduled for disbursement in January next year.
During the inaugural congress organized by the Fiji Teachers Registration Authority and the Ministry of Education at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro announced that 395 teachers qualified for these upgrades due to their improved qualifications. Additionally, 103 assistant principals will also see an increase in their salary bands to distinguish their roles from those of heads of departments.
Mr. Radrodro emphasized the importance of recognizing teachers’ efforts to retain their professional skills, which are vital for the development of the education sector. He urged the educators gathered at the conference to see themselves not just as teachers, but as key contributors in a pivotal time for education in Fiji.
This year’s conference theme, “Transforming Education: Closing Gaps, Connecting Minds, Shaping Tomorrow,” underscores the collaborative approach of the Ministry of Education, the FTRA, and other stakeholders in enhancing the education system.
Mr. Radrodro called on educators to go beyond simply imparting knowledge, highlighting the importance of shaping students’ character, echoing Martin Luther King Jr.’s sentiment that true education combines intelligence with character. He also raised concerns about literacy and numeracy, pointing out that many students struggle with basic skills upon entering secondary school.
To address these challenges, he encouraged teachers to explore alternative curricula and training that can better meet diverse learning needs, particularly for those facing obstacles like autism or behavioral issues. He concluded with a call for unity in ensuring all students are given the chance to succeed.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in recognizing and rewarding the dedication of teachers in Fiji, ultimately aiming to enhance the educational landscape of the country. It serves as a hopeful reminder of the importance of continuous professional development within the education sector.
