Fiji Teachers Demand Safety and Fair Pay: A New Era for Education?

The Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) is advocating for the introduction of a Teachers Protection Policy as part of the upcoming amendments to the Education Act of 1966. General Secretary Muniappa Goundar stressed the importance of establishing such a policy to create a safer and more conducive environment for educators, aligning with international norms regarding children’s rights. He highlighted the necessity for teachers to feel secure within classrooms and school premises as a fundamental step toward enhancing the quality of education in Fiji.

Goundar’s advocacy comes in light of recent incidents of student aggression toward teachers, which have prompted concerns about their safety. He has been a vocal proponent for the implementation of consequences for violent behavior, emphasizing the need for effective conflict resolution and behavior management training for both educators and students.

Moreover, Goundar is pushing not only for improved safety for teachers but also for fair remuneration, as many educators are leaving the profession for better-paying opportunities abroad. He remains optimistic that the review of the Education Act will ensure regular salary adjustments for teachers, thereby aligning with international standards, including UNESCO’s goals and Sustainable Development Goal 4.

The union commended the current coalition government for its willingness to engage in discussions about the educational framework—an opportunity that has not been available in the past 16 years.
