The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has responded to concerns regarding the adequacy of consultations on Energy Fiji Limited’s (EFL) proposed electricity tariff increase of 32 percent over four years. Residents in Labasa expressed dissatisfaction with the initial sessions, labeling them more as awareness programs than genuine consultations due to the absence of senior officials and the lack of direct engagement with the community.

FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta defended the consultation process, emphasizing that these engagements are designed to be one-on-one, allowing residents to have direct conversations with officers. Jiuta assured that the feedback from these interactions is being duly recorded and taken into consideration. The FCCC’s teams are currently active in the Northern and Western Divisions, while consultations in the Central Division are set to commence next week.

To further enhance engagement, Jiuta announced her participation in the upcoming consultation in Nadi at FNPF Plaza, where Fijians will have the opportunity to speak with her directly. The FCCC has also reached out to key stakeholders, including business groups and NGOs, inviting them to submit written feedback and participate in roundtable discussions.

It is vital to note that the tariff proposal originates from Energy Fiji Limited, not the FCCC, which is primarily facilitating the consultation process. EFL representatives will be present at these meetings to address technical inquiries, while FCCC officers provide clarifications about the process and collect public input.

With a 21-day consultation period established, the FCCC has introduced a Bill Calculator tool to help the public visualize potential changes to their electricity bills. The commission encourages accurate reporting of its activities and statements, stating that misinformation can hinder public participation and support. Community members are also welcome to share their feedback online, further enhancing engagement in this crucial discussion about future electricity pricing in Fiji.
