Concerns are mounting regarding proposed increases to tariffs from Energy Fiji Limited, prompting calls from Members of Parliament and members of the public to ensure that any adjustments are made with caution to avoid negatively impacting economic stability and public confidence.
Government MP and National Federation Party Leader, Professor Biman Prasad, has emphasized that tariff adjustments must be handled transparently, with proper consultations and appropriate timing. He cautions that hasty or poorly structured decisions could erode public trust and hinder economic progress. “This process should be handled carefully and should be open and transparent,” stated Prof Prasad, who maintains that now is not the right time for an increase in electricity tariffs. He urges decision-makers to tread lightly and consider the current positive trajectory of the economy.
In response to these concerns, Senikavika Jiuta, Chief Executive of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission, has defended the consultation process surrounding Energy Fiji Limited’s tariff adjustments. He highlighted the importance of stakeholder consultations, which involve direct, face-to-face discussions designed to gather public input. Jiuta revealed that the strategy has evolved; if citizens do not come forward voluntarily, his team will proactively engage with them to ensure their voices are heard.
This approach aims to safeguard public sentiment and guarantee that feedback is integrated into any potential decisions, promoting both transparency and fairness in the process. As energy discussions unfold, it is crucial for stakeholders to strike a balance that supports both economic growth and community well-being.
