Several major cases of fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering involving substantial amounts of money have been turned over to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for legal action. This announcement was made by Nitin Gandhi, the chairperson of the Tax Crimes Taskforce, during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) and eight collaborative agencies.
While specific details remain confidential due to ongoing investigations, reports indicate that the cases pertain to tax evasion, financial fraud, and laundering activities. Among these, one notable case involves a sophisticated VAT fraud scheme, while others concern individuals who falsely represented themselves as tax agents and submitted fraudulent tax returns.
Mr. Gandhi emphasized the proactive approach of the taskforce in strengthening relationships and sharing intelligence among agencies to bolster enforcement mechanisms. He stated, “Where we see evidence of tax evasion, we will ensure that illegal actions are prosecuted adequately, making it clear that tax evasion will not be tolerated.”
Udit Singh, the CEO of FRCS, confirmed that most cases involve local entities, with some having international connections. He highlighted that the initiative not only seeks to recover lost revenue but also serves as a deterrent against future tax infractions, reinforcing public trust in the financial system.
To enhance financial transparency, Mr. Gandhi referenced a new policy in the upcoming 2025/2026 National Budget requiring sole proprietors to declare their assets annually. This measure aims to identify discrepancies between reported income and actual wealth, showcasing a commitment to fiscal integrity.
As the taskforce continues its efforts, it is also empowered to recommend necessary legislative reforms to further address and prevent financial misconduct in Fiji. The progress made thus far reflects a determined stride toward reinforcing accountability in the nation’s tax system, ultimately aiming for a fairer economic landscape that benefits all citizens.
