The Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, recently convened with the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, to bolster school-based advocacy initiatives in response to increasing drug use among students. This meeting marks a proactive step by the government to address the alarming trend of drug involvement in schools, particularly as concerns grow about students engaging in drug sales and using performance-enhancing substances.
During their discussions, both ministers emphasized the necessity for early and targeted interventions tailored to the needs of students. They specifically pointed out the identification of “red-zone schools” that would benefit from intensified prevention programs and advocacy initiatives. Highlighting the urgency of school-level engagement, they underscored its critical role in mitigating risks that youth face today.
The proposed measures include enhancing the Fiji Police Force’s involvement in school advocacy, broadcasting community-policing messages on select radio stations, and utilizing billboards to promote drug-free messages. One notable initiative is the re-establishment of the Domonivuli program, aimed at raising awareness about the dangers associated with drug use.
Emerging social challenges have also been flagged, including the serious implications of students not only using drugs recreationally but also for enhancing athletic performance. These concerns pose significant threats to the health and safety of students, as well as the integrity of sports.
Government officials encouraged school principals to take leadership positions in confronting these challenges, urging government schools to set a positive example. Additional recommendations include reviewing school curriculums to incorporate drug-related issues more robustly, offering counseling services, and reinforcing monitoring mechanisms to gauge the effectiveness of current advocacy efforts.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to a coordinated, comprehensive government approach to steer students towards positive futures, ultimately promoting the welfare of young people across the nation. This initiative is seen not just as a response to a pressing issue but as a long-term strategy to foster a safer environment in educational settings.
