The ongoing challenge of online abuse and harassment targeting human rights defenders in Fiji has garnered significant condemnation from the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission. The Commission has voiced deep concern over several recent incidents that have come to light following Human Rights Day 2025, emphasizing the detrimental impact such actions have on activists and the wider Fijian community.

Commission director Loukinikini Lewaravu underscored the importance of freedom of expression while asserting that it should not be misused as a cover for hate speech, online abuse, or the promotion of violence and harassment. She stressed the necessity of safeguarding fundamental rights and called for a culture of respect and dignity that allows all Fijians to be heard and to engage meaningfully in the nation’s development.

Lewaravu stated, “Human rights defenders, including women human rights defenders, must be able to carry out their work without fear of intimidation, harassment, or reprisals, whether in physical, digital, or public spaces.” This statement highlights the critical need for a safe environment for those working to protect and promote human rights in the country.

The Commission also urged the public to reject hate-filled content and actively support the protection of the dignity and rights of all individuals. “A society that protects its human rights defenders protects itself,” Lewaravu remarked, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human rights and societal welfare.

In light of these pressing challenges, the Commission has called for a collective effort to defend human rights defenders, promote a culture of tolerance for diverse opinions, and hold accountable those who infringe upon the rights of others. The encouragement of civic engagement and respect for all voices plays a vital role in fostering an inclusive and just society, providing hope for a future where all individuals can advocate for their rights without fear.
