Water shortages continue to pose significant challenges for maritime and rural communities, prompting the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to actively seek long-lasting solutions. Minister Sakiasi Ditoka emphasized the critical nature of the situation, noting that access to clean drinking water is a top priority for the government, particularly for residents in remote areas.
Recent visits to maritime communities have underscored the urgent need for improvement in water supply systems. Ditoka expressed the importance of adopting a collaborative approach across government departments, stating that the Ministry of Public Works will be a key partner in this initiative. He mentioned plans to engage with development and donor partners to learn from successful water supply systems implemented in lower-lying coral atolls.
Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau reported that assessments are currently being conducted in outer island communities to gauge the extent of water supply issues. He assured that close coordination with the Ministry of Rural Development ensures a thorough understanding of specific needs in these areas. The Water Authority of Fiji remains on standby to assist with water replenishment efforts.
The insights gathered from these assessments are expected to guide future strategies and investments aimed at enhancing access to clean water and improving living conditions in maritime and rural regions. This comprehensive approach reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of these communities and fostering a sustainable solution to their water supply challenges.
