The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has raised concerns that border delays are leading to increased costs for both businesses and consumers in Fiji. To address these issues, the agency has introduced its National Time Release Study Report 2025, aimed at improving airfreight clearance processes.

Udit Singh, Chief Executive of FRCS, emphasized that this study is a crucial tool to identify bottlenecks and enhance trade procedures. He pointed out that with airport cargo operations running around the clock, efficient clearance is vital for time-sensitive products such as pharmaceuticals, perishables, and high-value shipments. Singh remarked, “This initiative represents a vital step toward enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of border procedures while maintaining the integrity of trade control measures.”

Singh highlighted that airfreight is notably more expensive than sea freight, and delays can unfairly drive up costs significantly. The study focuses on measuring the time required for the release and clearance of imported goods, with findings expected to inform reforms that will align Fiji’s processes with international best practices.

By following the recommendations from the study, Singh believes that Fiji can improve its trading across borders score, which will enhance the country’s position within global supply chains. The study was undertaken with collaboration from the World Customs Organization and the World Bank Group, involving key stakeholders such as the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, Air Terminal Services, and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.

Singh concluded that the successful implementation of the report’s recommendations could lead to lower trade costs, improved border efficiency, and ultimately strengthen the growth and competitiveness of various industries across Fiji, fostering a more robust economic landscape.
