As preparations ramp up for the Commonwealth Games in July, Fiji’s swimming athletes are gearing up to compete for spots on the national team heading to Glasgow, Scotland. With a quota allowing for eight athletes—four male and four female—the competition is heating up as the nation aims for a podium finish in the prestigious event.
Selection for this elite team involves performance at national competitions, notably the Grand Prix and the Open Nationals. Recent Grand Prix events, held at the Damodar National Aquatic Centre in Suva, have showcased emerging talents alongside established swimmers.
National coach Willie Elaisa notes that younger swimmers are making impressive strides, indicating a promising future for Fiji’s swimming contingent. “The younger ones, I can see them making their way up,” Elaisa commented, emphasizing the importance of commitment among swimmers. “If you watch, you will almost notice the standout swimmers.”
He believes that a collective effort from coaches and administrators is essential to prepare these athletes for the challenges ahead. Elaisa draws inspiration from the national rugby sevens team, which consistently travels with the mindset of victory. “If you want it, if you think you can do it, then anything is possible,” he emphasized, encouraging the athletes to adopt a similar belief as they pursue their dreams of competing at the Commonwealth Games.
With a focus on determination and unity, Fiji’s swimming community is poised to support its athletes in their quest for excellence on the international stage, instilling hope for a strong performance in Glasgow.
