The Fiji Bureau of Statistics has published a recent report indicating that the energy sector is the leading contributor to climate change within the country. The report, unveiled in Suva, highlights the significant role energy plays in climate statistics and its effects on gender-related outcomes concerning climate change.
Senior Statistician Abdul Sahib emphasized that while all sectors contribute to climate change, energy is indispensable. He pointed out that fossil fuel-generated electricity remains the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, despite ongoing advancements in renewable energy technologies. In fact, in 2023, renewable energy accounted for 32 percent of Fiji’s electricity, showcasing progress in this area. Sahib stated, “This critical area is essential, and data collection from all relevant ministries allows us to formulate this document that emphasizes electricity generation and the role of renewable energy.”
In addition to Sahib’s insights, Senivasa Waqairamasi, the Director of the Department of Climate Change, remarked that the report enhances Fiji’s climate resilience. He stressed the importance of centralized climate data in fostering consistent, evidence-based decision-making across various sectors in the country.
