The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has successfully overseen the destruction of 4.1 tonnes of illicit drugs, specifically methamphetamine, in an operation associated with the ongoing legal proceedings against Justin Ho and several others. This significant destruction took place under stringent security measures at the Dignified Crematorium in Davuilevu, with the support of the Fiji Police Force and military personnel.
The procedure commenced last Monday, in compliance with a Lautoka High Court order issued in December of the previous year. The ODPP had previously expressed concerns to the court regarding the impracticality and potential hazards of storing the seized drugs until the conclusion of the case, which prompted the request for their destruction.
Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, reported to the court the successful completion of the destruction, stating that a video recording and a detailed report will soon be submitted as part of the court documentation. The ongoing case, known as State-v-Justin Ho and others, is scheduled to reconvene on March 17, 2025, for further discussions on legal disclosures and pre-trial documents.
This operation underscores Fiji’s dedication to combating drug-related crime through transparency and accountability. It reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding public welfare and mitigating potential risks to community safety, highlighting the judicial system’s firm stance against drug trafficking.
By taking decisive actions in tackling such significant cases, Fiji moves toward fostering safer communities and displays a hopeful commitment to addressing drug abuse and trafficking issues effectively.
