A recent discussion on the need for increased female representation on boards in Fiji underlines the country’s growing recognition of gender equality’s role in economic development. Although the Fijian market is performing slightly better than some regions and is in line with the global average, the under-representation of women in leadership positions remains a significant concern.

Nitin Gandhi, Chairperson of the South Pacific Stock Exchange, stressed the importance of gender diversity for attracting international investments and urged leaders, investors, and policymakers to actively foster gender equality. He pointed out that promoting women in leadership and investment must become an ongoing commitment rather than a one-day initiative. The United Nations Women Empowerment Principles, which do not require financial commitments from companies, were highlighted as a useful framework for organizations aimed at becoming more gender-responsive.

This discussion aligns with earlier findings from the Fiji Country Gender Assessment 2023, which reported that only 21 percent of board members in Fiji are women. Despite improvements, Fiji ranks lowest in the Pacific concerning women’s leadership representation, with men holding around six of seven CEO positions. Previous reports indicate modest gains, showing an increase in female directors from 20% in 2021 to 25% in 2024, but it’s clear there is still significant room for improvement.

Gandhi’s announcement that the SPX will publish a directory showcasing women in board and senior executive roles aims to enhance visibility and support prospective female leaders in the corporate sector. This initiative is aligned with the broader efforts by the Fijian government to close the gender gap in leadership roles and improve women’s economic participation, offering hope for a more balanced and equitable society.

The promotion of gender equality is increasingly recognized as not just a moral imperative but also a vital component of sustainable economic growth. Fiji’s commitment to enhancing the representation of women in leadership roles reflects a positive trajectory toward a future where women’s contributions are equally acknowledged and valued in every sector. This movement towards inclusivity sets a promising example for the Pacific region and beyond.
