A new career center is being proposed to address the labor shortage in Fiji, an initiative spearheaded by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited, the company behind FIJI Water. Marigold Moody, the assistant general counsel for the South Pacific, highlighted this initiative during the Top Executives Conference 2024 (TO PEX2024) held at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau.
Moody explained that the project represents a significant investment in Fiji and is part of a broader strategy to enhance workforce skills in the region. “One of these special projects which are in progress is our proposed Career Centre and investing in Fiji’s workforce through skills development,” she stated.
FIJI Water, along with NPDL Neptune, which shares common ownership, has reported a notable challenge: a shortage of skilled Pacific Island seafarers needed to operate their fleet, which currently consists of approximately 11 vessels serving the Pacific. Moody emphasized, “We have a serious skills shortage in terms of Pacific Island seafarers available and appropriately skilled to operate our vessels.”
The company has committed more than FJ$140 million toward expanding its operational capacity by 47 percent. To meet the expected future demand, Moody noted, “Over the next 10 years, we’re going to build up to utilizing that capacity, and we’re going to need a lot more people to do that.”
The planned career center in Suva, expected to open in 2025, will be developed in partnership with Fiji National University. The focus will be on ensuring job readiness and filling the skills gap that currently exists. As Moody mentioned, they aim to implement a curriculum tailored to the specific needs of employers, highlighting the importance of training that meets the demands of the job market.
Moreover, they are seeking to foster collaboration with other members of the manufacturing and marine industries through an industry council to enhance the program’s effectiveness.
This initiative promises to provide valuable opportunities for skill development while simultaneously addressing the pressing employment needs within the region. It is a hopeful step towards revitalizing the local economy and ensuring a sustainable workforce for the future.
In summary, the establishment of a career center by FIJI Water emphasizes the company’s commitment to tackling labor shortages through effective skills development. This initiative not only aims to prepare individuals for the job market but also strengthens partnerships within the industry, paving the way for a brighter economic future in Fiji.
