In a proactive initiative to bolster disaster preparedness in Fiji, the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, launched new disaster awareness materials in Suva. This effort is particularly aimed at educating students from years 9 to 13, along with their families, about the importance of being prepared for natural disasters, especially as the cyclone season approaches.

Inoke Raikoso, Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, acknowledged the challenges associated with fostering a culture of preparedness among youth, pointing out that many communities remain vulnerable and several school infrastructures date back to the 1800s, complicating efforts to implement effective safety strategies.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, Isoa Talemaibua, emphasized that the distribution of 10,000 calendars and educational materials reflects a significant partnership aimed at ensuring that individuals, families, and businesses are better equipped to handle natural disasters. These materials serve not merely as informational tools, but as daily reminders for families to enhance their readiness.

This initiative has already reached over 50,000 homes and nearly 70,000 students nationwide in the past year, with an additional 50,000 households expected to receive these materials this year.
