The Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, has launched new disaster awareness materials in Suva as part of its commitment to enhance preparedness for natural disasters. This initiative, targeting students from years 9 to 13 and their families, is designed to instill a culture of disaster readiness ahead of the upcoming cyclone season.

Inoke Raikoso, a Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, highlighted the challenges in cultivating a culture of preparedness among the youth, particularly given the vulnerability of many communities and the outdated infrastructure of several schools, some of which have been in operation since the 1800s.

Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, emphasized that the distribution of 10,000 calendars and educational materials signifies a meaningful partnership aimed at ensuring that individuals, families, and businesses throughout Fiji are better prepared for natural disasters. These materials serve as practical tools, acting as daily reminders for families to take necessary steps toward preparedness.

Over the past year, more than 50,000 homes and nearly 70,000 students have already benefited from similar campaigns, with an additional 50,000 homes set to receive awareness materials this year.
