In a significant advancement for urban waste management, the Government of Fiji has entered into a crucial agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). On February 4, 2025, during a ceremony at the Ministry of Local Government in Suva, the Transaction Advisory Services Agreement was signed jointly by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
This initiative represents an important step in addressing the waste management issues in Fiji’s Western Division. The agreement is set to facilitate the establishment of a robust and sustainable waste management system, which may involve constructing a sanitary landfill and rehabilitating four existing open dumpsites in Sigatoka, Lautoka, Ba, and Rakiraki.
The project will be executed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, ensuring close collaboration between the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. This approach not only aims to enhance the waste management infrastructure but also seeks to promote environmental sustainability and improve public health in the region.
Officials emphasized that this initiative is in line with Fiji’s overarching environmental objectives, focusing on reducing pollution and managing waste effectively while supporting sustainable development. The agreement underscores both the Government of Fiji and ADB’s dedication to fostering environmental resilience and nurturing sustainable urban growth through innovative and cooperative efforts.
This positive collaboration is not only expected to improve waste management but also contribute to the overall well-being of communities in the Western Division, paving the way for a cleaner and healthier environment.
