In a significant effort to enhance disaster preparedness in Fiji, the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, in partnership with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, has launched new disaster awareness materials in Suva. This initiative targets students in years 9 to 13 and their families, emphasizing the critical need for readiness as the cyclone season approaches, typically lasting from November to April.
Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, Inoke Raikoso, outlined the challenges in promoting a culture of disaster preparedness, particularly given the vulnerabilities of many communities and the aging infrastructure of various schools, some of which date back to the 1800s. This complicates the implementation of effective disaster risk management strategies.
Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, highlighted that the distribution of 10,000 calendars and educational materials is more than a logistical effort; it is a celebration of the partnership focused on enhancing community resilience. These materials are designed to serve as daily reminders for families to prioritize their disaster preparedness.
Over the past year, more than 50,000 homes and nearly 70,000 students have benefited from similar campaigns, with an additional 50,000 households slated to receive resources this year. Such substantial outreach reflects a comprehensive commitment to fostering a knowledgeable community capable of facing the challenges posed by natural disasters.
This initiative is aligned with ongoing government strategies advocating for household preparedness and youth involvement in disaster risk management, as emphasized by Minister Sakiasi Ditoka. By prioritizing education and youth engagement, Fiji is making significant strides towards safeguarding its citizens against the growing threats posed by climate change.
The launch of these disaster awareness materials stands as a hopeful step towards nurturing a resilient culture in Fiji. These educational efforts not only aim to improve safety and awareness among the populace but also instill confidence in the community’s ability to tackle future challenges. As Fiji gears up for the cyclone season, such proactive measures are vital to ensuring a safer future for all citizens.
